The Energy Department is responsible for the
development, regulation and management of energy resources in a country or
state. It plays a key role in ensuring energy security, sustainability and
efficiency through policies, infrastructure development and research efforts.
Current
Activities:
§  Solar
and Wind Power: In
the last 10 years, India’s solar power generation capacity has increased by 32
times, making it the third largest solar power generation country in the world.
With this, non-fossil fuel energy capacity has increased three times.
§  Green
Hydrogen Mission: In
January 2023, the Union Government launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission
with a cost of Rs. 19,744 crore. Through this mission, the objective is to make
India a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen.
§  Natural
Gas Usage: By
2030, the government has set a target to increase the share of natural gas in
the energy mix to 15%. To achieve this, measures such as expansion of the
national gas pipeline, improvement of city gas distribution infrastructure are
being taken.
Future
Plans:
·       Renewable
Energy Targets: India
plans to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy generation capacity by 2030. This
will significantly increase the share of renewable energy in the country's
energy needs.
·       Green
Hydrogen Production: The
target is to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually in the coming
years. This will play a key role in improving India's clean energy use.
·       Ethanol
Blending: The
government plans to increase the ethanol blend from 19 percent to 20 percent by
October. This will reduce dependence on fuel imports and also help protect the
environment.
These measures and plans will undoubtedly put
India's energy sector on a sound and sustainable path.
