Meteorological Centre was started in the 18th century. In 1786, William Petrie,
an officer of the East India Company, privately established an astronomical
observatory at Egmore. Later, in 1792, the Governor of Madras, Charles Oakley,
officially established this observatory as the Madras Astronomical Observatory.
The observatory initially focused on astronomical research. Over time, when the
Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) was established in 1875, all
meteorological services in India were brought under a central authority.
In
1945, the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai was established on the basis
of the Madras Astronomical Observatory. It is responsible for overseeing
meteorological work in South India. Thus, the Chennai Meteorological Centre,
which started as a private astronomical observatory, has today developed into a
major meteorological service provider in South India.
