Thaipusam Festival

The Thaipusam festival is on February 1st

Thaipusam is one of the most auspicious days for Lord Murugan. Just as the Pongal festival is significant in the month of Thai, Thaipusam is equally important. Every year, Murugan devotees celebrate Thaipusam on the auspicious day in the month of Thai when the Poosam star and the full moon coincide. This year, Thaipusam is celebrated on February 1st. Furthermore, according to mythological history, Thaipusam is the day when Goddess Parvati, at the Thiruchendur Murugan temple, the second of the six abodes of Murugan, gathered all her power and bestowed the victorious Vel (spear) upon her son Murugan to destroy the demon Taraka and protect the world. This event of receiving the divine spear, which destroyed evil and established righteousness, is a special celebration for Murugan devotees. On this auspicious day, Murugan devotees observe strict fasts and undertake pilgrimages to the six abodes and other Murugan temples. It is customary to offer vows such as carrying Kavadi, carrying milk pots, and piercing the body with skewers to fulfill their wishes. Also, offering food (Annadanam) on this day is considered highly meritorious.

It is customary for devotees visiting the Thiruchendur Murugan temple to bathe in the sea and the Naazhi well, or at least dip their feet in the sea, before entering the temple to worship the deity. To ensure that devotees enter the temple cleanly after washing off the sand from their feet, a new artificial stream has been constructed along the beach entrance pathway.
