| India faces climate and energy challenges |
In February 2025, India faced significant climate change and energy-related challenges.
Climate change and agricultural impacts
·       Unusual
temperature rise: Temperatures
in central and northern India were up to 6°C above normal in February. This
situation is expected to have severe impacts on wheat crops. This is likely to
lead to a decline in wheat production for the fourth consecutive year.
·       Water
scarcity in Jammu & Kashmir: Due to high temperatures and prolonged
lack of rainfall, many water sources in Kashmir, including streams, ponds, and
the Jhelum River, have dried up. Many villages are facing water shortages.

Energy growth and challenges
·       Coal-fired
power generation growth: India
is set to expand coal-fired power generation by 30,000 MW. This is seen as a
key solution as the demand for electricity is expected to increase by 7% per
year.
·       Challenges
in new energy sources: India
needs to double the amount of solar and wind power installations every year to
meet its 2030 green energy target. But, by 2024, only 28,000 MW of new green
energy capacity was created.
·       Nuclear
power expansion: The
Indian government has allocated $2 billion (USD) for nuclear power development
and set a target of generating 100,000 MW of nuclear power by 2047.
Key events
·       India
Climate Week 2025: Held
from February 3-7, the event focused on green development and climate change
mitigation solutions.
·       Prayag
Maha Kumbh Mela 2025: Held
from January 13 to February 26, the event was attended by over 660 million
devotees. It is a mega event that needs to be planned with consideration of
water management and environmental impacts.
