As of February 20, 2025, Rekha Gupta has been appointed as the 9th Chief Minister of Delhi, succeeding Atishi Marlena. This marks a significant political shift, as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) returns to power in Delhi after 27 years.
Early Life and Education
Rekha Gupta was born on July 19,
1974, in Julana, Haryana. She pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Delhi
University and later obtained a Bachelor of Laws from Chaudhary Charan Singh
University, Meerut, in 2022.
Political Career
Gupta's political journey began with
her election as President of the Delhi University Students' Union in 1996,
representing the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. She has served as a
three-time councillor and former mayor of the South Delhi Municipal
Corporation. In the 2025 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections, she won the
Shalimar Bagh constituency, defeating AAP's Bandana Kumari. On February 19,
2025, she was elected as the Leader of the BJP Legislative Party in Delhi and
subsequently appointed as Chief Minister on February 20, 2025.
Recent Developments
Shortly before Gupta's appointment,
a tragic stampede occurred at New Delhi's main railway station on February 16,
2025, resulting in at least 18 fatalities. The incident highlighted ongoing
challenges in managing large crowds during significant events.
Rekha Gupta's leadership marks a new
chapter in Delhi's political landscape, with expectations focused on her
approach to governance and policy implementation in the capital city.
