Assam faces severe flooding

Every year, Assam faces severeflooding due to the monsoon and the overflowing of the Brahmaputra River. In 2026, the state once again encountered widespread flooding, which affected lakhs of people, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted normal life. Continuous monsoon rains in Assam and neighboring northeastern states caused water levels in the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries to cross the danger mark. As floodwaters spread rapidly, low-lying villages, agricultural lands, and urban areas were submerged. Although water levels have begun to recede in several districts, relief and rehabilitation operations are ongoing. This article outlines the causes of the floods in Assam, their impact, government measures, and the current flood situation.

Several districts experienced severe flooding due to the following reasons:

•                Floodwaters disrupted transportation, electricity supply, schools, and public services across several districts.

Persistent heavy rainfall and rising water levels in the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries are cited as the primary causes of the current floods in Assam. State Chief Minister HimantaBiswa Sarma has stated that excessive rainfall is the reason for this flood disaster.

The Assam government, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indian Army, Air Force, and local volunteers worked together to handle the crisis.

A relief package worth approximately ₹12 crore has been announced to assist flood-affected families. Officials are focusing on rebuilding infrastructure, restoring essential services, and supporting the families impacted by the floods.

The 2026 Assam floods once again highlighted the state's vulnerability to annual monsoon flooding. While rescue teams and government agencies acted swiftly to minimize losses, long-term flood management, robust embankments, improved drainage systems, and sustainable river management are essential to mitigate future disasters. Community preparedness and coordinated disaster response efforts continue to play a crucial role in safeguarding lives and livelihoods across Assam.  As of now, the receding of floodwaters in many areas is a positive sign; however, rescue, relief, and rehabilitation operations in the affected regions are not yet complete.
