| Origin and tradition of ginger |
Ginger
(Zingiber officinale) is a traditional herb used in India and Southeast Asia
for thousands of years. Especially in states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu,
and Kerala, ginger is considered an important ingredient that enhances the
taste and medicinal properties of food. Ginger has a unique place in
traditional delicacies, Ayurvedic medicines, and festive seasonings.
Production capacity and geographical distribution :
About 18-20
lakh tonnes of ginger is produced in India annually. Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh,
and the northeastern states are the major production centers. High-quality
ginger is produced for export in the “Sirasila” and “Mukteswaram” regions of
Andhra Pradesh. Soil quality, rainfall amount, and biosecurity methods directly
affect production capacity.

Current technological developments
Modern
technologies such as drip irrigation, plastic mulching, automatic seed planting
machines, and the use of natural pesticides have been introduced in ginger
production. Crop monitoring has been simplified through GPS and drone
technology. Meanwhile, the post-harvest efficiency of ginger has been enhanced
through cold storage and rapid transportation methods. These advances not only
improve yield but also ensure better quality for local consumption and export.
Latest Updates and Future
In 2025,
India is set to become one of the world’s leading ginger exporters. The
government and private sectors are working together to reduce carbon footprint
and promote organic ginger production. In the future, high-yielding hybrid
