Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer Vinfast has set up a state-of-the-art car manufacturing plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, with an investment of around ₹16,000 crore, tapping into India's growing electric vehicle sector. The plant is located in a special economic zone near the Thoothukudi Port Industrial Estate. 114 acres of land has been earmarked for manufacturing, testing and support facilities. The inauguration ceremony was held on September 15, 2025, which was attended by key state and company officials. Advanced robotic assembly cutting will ensure productivity and efficiency. The plant has a dedicated car testing area for safety and performance evaluations. Modern workforce facilities including training centers, and storage warehouses are part of the infrastructure. The focus will be on manufacturing electric SUVs, sedans and hybrid hatchbacks for the domestic and export markets. The first-year production capacity will be 50,000 cars, with plans to expand to 1.5 lakh units by 2028. The first batch of vehicles was launched in the Indian market on August 04.08.2025. Showrooms are planned to be set up in major cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi and Coimbatore. The project will create over 5,000 direct jobs by 2026. Partnerships with local suppliers are aimed at boosting the regional economy and reducing production costs. Vinfast's Tuticorin plant will be a major hub for sustainable and innovative automobile manufacturing in India.
